Where we came from... This thing we call Sweet Lorraine's and its roots can be traced back to, of all things, a cheesecake! Perhaps we're being a bit literal, yet that is the first thing consistently sold by the company - a Russian Cheesecake. Starting in 1980 Lorraine sold these and other baked goods to restaurants and caterers out of her kitchen at home. Then, as capitalism would have it, supply and demand created the need for commercial space! Hence Sweet Lorraine's Deli in Madison Heights opened its doors in 1982. Thankfully, this theme continued to allow the deli to double its size five years later and in 1992 our first store enjoyed a thorough renovation. It was in 1984 that Sweet Lorraine's, Inc. took the risk of opening a full service restaurant. The spot chosen was that of the old Raven Gallery, a coffeehouse known nationally for spotlighting some of the greatest folk singers and comedians of the 60's and 70's. It was here at Sweet Lorraine's Cafe that our creative and healthful "Modern American Cooking" grew into notoriety, enjoying Detroit Monthly's "Restaurant of the Year" award and earning a four-star rating by The Detroit News. The cafe, and Lorraine personality, have since enjoyed a great deal of positive press including radio, television, cable T.V., reviews, and travel publications. Throughout time we have come to be known for creativity,
uniqueness, and both consistency and change. These are our themes. Together
we will write the next chapter of this story ... we welcome you! |

Lorraine
Platman Chef Lorraine was born in Southend-on -Sea, Essex, England. She emigrated with her family to the U.S. at the age of ten. After developing an interest at an early age in watercolors, as well as woodblock and pen-and-ink drawing, she won recognition for her abilities and a National Art Award. In college, at Michigan State University and Grand Valley State Colleges, her studies included environmental science and wildlife ecology. After college, she worked as manager at
local art galleries, and moonlighted as a caterer and wholesale baker out of
her home. In 1982 she opened her first restaurant - a defunct deli, and
renamed it Sweet Lorraine's Deli and Cafe. In 1984 Sweet Lorraine's Cafe was
opened in Southfield, Michigan. It has been lauded regionally and has
been voted ”One of Michigan’s Top Ten Favorite Restaurant” in The Zagat Guide
for Michigan. The Livonia, Michigan Sweet Lorraine’s Cafe and Bar
opened to enthusiastic crowds and critical acclaim in April 2000 inside The
Livonia Marriott Laurel Park Place. Lorraine divides her time between the four locations as chef/proprietor. Her many interests include mystery novels, travel to her favorite places--including Maine and Portugal, gardening, environmental and animal rights causes and of course, Globally-inspired cooking. She lives in Bloomfield, Michigan with her husband, Gary Sussman and four, somewhat loving, cats. |
