Happy Spring to all!
Michigan is a great agriculture state but our fresh
produce doesn’t really start to come into the
markets until late May. The first items up in the
fields are rhurbarb, asparagus, green house herbs &
cold weather greens. You can sometimes find hard
squashes and potatoes that have been cellared. We
will feature rhubarb in a wonderful rhubarb
strawberry crisp in May-- it’s wonderful- even if
you think you don’t like rhubarb try our dessert! We
are also grilling fresh asparagus for sides dishes,
check it out!
Gary and I were up north recently but no morels yet!
What we did find, were some really great new
restaurants in Traverse City. A lovely coffee shop
with a pizza oven called “Crema”--Gary said the best
cinnamon roll he’s ever had, it was a giant, I think
he ate it for three days! We didn’t eat at Hanna
bisto and bar but the menu looked great. An alumnia
of Sweet Lorraines - Paul Danielson ( a dining room
manager in the 90’s) moved to Traverse City and
opened in 2004 Trattoria Stella an unusual location
to say the least the old State Mental Hospital. The
whole area is being renovated with boutique shops,
wine tasting rooms (Black star Farms -one of our
favorites) , coffee shops and this great Italian
restaurant. Check out their website:
www.stellatc.com/trattoria_stella_family.php
I also have to highly recommend a very little
restaurant called the Cooks' house on Front street.
www.thecookshouse.typepad.com. WOW - approx 18 seat
run by husband and wife Eric Patterson and Jennifer
Blakeslee- local sustainable cuisine- everything we
had was super- really check this little gem out,
they opened April 1st & I think they will be a real
winner in town!
I left Traverse City really jealous of what’s going
on with the chefs and the farmer’s --they are
working together and both are the winners!
Check out our new menus at all of our locations &
don’t forget we have outdoor dining at our Livonia
Sweet Lorraine’s. If you are wondering where our
Dining Room manager Pamela has been --she had a baby
girl in April -everyone is doing well!
